Precision Machining China: Intelligent Manufacturing Drives High-Precision Equipment Boom

Precision Machining China: Intelligent Manufacturing Drives High-Precision Equipment Boom

Precision machining technology is becoming the core engine for high-quality development in China's manufacturing sector, experiencing vibrant growth driven by intelligent transformation and policy dividends.

Manufacturing serves as the mainstay of the national economy, and the development level of Precision Machining China directly determines the overall competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing. Currently, China's precision machining industry is undergoing unprecedented growth, driven by advancements in intelligent equipment manufacturing and high-end CNC machine tools.

As manufacturing transformation toward intelligentization accelerates, precision machining technology has become an indispensable supporting force for high-precision sectors including aerospace, new energy vehicles, and semiconductors.

01 Industry Scale: Precision Machining Enters the Fast Lane

China's precision machining industry has formed a massive market approaching trillion-level scale. Latest data shows that China's precision instrument market reached ¥898.8 billion in 2024, representing 5% year-on-year growth, with projections indicating an increase to ¥943.74 billion by 2025.

As the foundation of precision manufacturing, the machine tool industry demonstrates equally impressive performance. From January to May 2025, China's machine tool industry achieved total revenue of ¥404.8 billion, with metal cutting machines growing 14.5% year-on-year and metal forming machines increasing 12.0%.

In terms of output, China produced 695,000 metal cutting machines in 2024, a 10.5% year-on-year increase, with projections exceeding 700,000 units in 2025. Metal forming machine output reached 160,000 units in 2024, growing 7.4% year-on-year, with expectations of modest growth to 162,000 units in 2025.

Regarding enterprise numbers, China had approximately 87,900 precision manufacturing-related enterprises as of April 2025, with market share gradually concentrating toward leading companies possessing high-precision design and manufacturing capabilities.

02 Technological Breakthroughs: High-End CNC and Five-Axis Linkage Lead the Way

In China's precision machining field, high-end CNC machine tools and five-axis machining technology represent the fastest-growing market segments.

In 2024, China's five-axis machine tool market surpassed ¥10 billion for the first time, with domestic machines exceeding 50% market share for the first time. This breakthrough achievement marks significant progress in China's high-precision processing domain.

Intelligent five-axis high-precision machining centers, serving as the "crown" of high-end equipment manufacturing, enable workpiece processing at various angles through rotational axes based on X, Y, and Z linear axes. They are particularly suitable for precision cutting of complex surfaces like impellers, blades, and marine propellers.

Such equipment plays crucial roles in aviation, aerospace, military, scientific research, precision instruments, and high-end medical devices.

In the first quarter of 2025, China's metal cutting machine tool market reached approximately ¥16.3 billion, growing 4.5% year-on-year. The market shows evident recovery momentum, particularly in high-end models.

03 Market Drivers: Multiple Factors Accelerate Industrial Upgrade

The robust development of Precision Machining China benefits from various driving factors.

Intelligent transformation represents the primary driving force. In the first three quarters of 2025, China's intelligent equipment manufacturing industry achieved 12.2% year-on-year growth in added value, with CNC machine tools, industrial control systems, 3D printing equipment, and industrial robots all recording double-digit production growth.

Industrial robot production increased 29.8% year-on-year, reaching 595,000 sets in the first three quarters—exceeding the total annual production of the previous year.

Policy support remains equally indispensable. The "Made in China 2025" plan identifies CNC machine tools as strategic priority areas, explicitly setting goals for improving numerical control rates. By 2024, China's machine tool numerical control rate had reached 51%.

Strong demand from downstream application markets also provides broad space for precision machining industry development. The aerospace sector constitutes the largest application market for five-axis machine tools, accounting for nearly 30%.

The automotive manufacturing industry, particularly the new energy vehicle sector, demonstrates continuously growing demand for lightweight, high-performance precision machining products. The semiconductor industry showed particularly outstanding demand performance for machine tools in the first quarter of 2025, with rapid growth momentum.

04 Future Prospects: Opportunities and Challenges Coexist

Looking ahead, China's precision machining industry faces both broad prospects and numerous challenges.

Exports are gradually becoming important growth engines. From January to May 2025, China's machine tool product exports reached $9.24 billion, growing 8.1% year-on-year while maintaining a trade surplus pattern.

Among these, metal cutting machine exports totaled $2.43 billion, increasing 10.7% year-on-year, while metal forming machine exports reached $1.34 billion, surging 36.2% year-on-year.

Domestic substitution continues accelerating. In the first quarter of 2025, the top ten metal cutting machine manufacturers accounted for 37.8% of total market sales, increasing 1.9 percentage points year-on-year.

Leading local enterprises like TRUMPF, Haitian Precision, and Beijing Jingdiao have transitioned from volume-protected market share to technology-breakthrough models ensuring high-quality profits.

The industry still faces challenges including core component import dependency and significant technology gaps in high-end markets. As emerging industries like new energy vehicles, robotics, and low-altitude economy develop rapidly, China's precision machining industry will welcome new growth opportunities.

As Chinese manufacturing advances toward the upper value chain, the technological level and market scale of Precision Machining China will continue improving. Over the next five years, with accelerating domestic substitution and expanding export markets, China's precision machining industry is expected to occupy increasingly important positions in the global competitive landscape.

Industrial clusters in eastern coastal regions, combined with central and western regional development potential, are collectively building a precision machining ecosystem rooted in China while serving global markets.
